An instagram account for the BBC has been hacked.
The BBC’s social media team has since tweeted an apology to the BBC’s users.
It is understood that the account was hijacked by a Russian hacker who has been linked to a hacking group called the Fancy Bear, which has been accused of stealing data from the BBC.
The BBC has said that it is working with the police to investigate the hack.
The UK’s Home Office said it is also investigating the incident.
A spokesman for the Home Office told the BBC: “We are aware of the incident, and are currently working with police to determine the circumstances of this breach and to ensure that there is no impact on the public’s confidence in the security of our services.”
The BBC said it has been “monitoring the situation closely” and has offered support to the public and the BBC itself.
A spokeswoman for the company said: “The BBC is currently monitoring the situation and has taken steps to reassure our users that they are safe and secure.
We are also working with law enforcement to assist them.”
The hack comes just days after it was revealed that the UK’s security services have been investigating the BBC for more than a year.
A separate BBC hack last month was traced back to a Russian group called Fancy Bear.
